Fanatec Podium Steering Wheel Porsche 911 GT3 R Suede

Born to Win. With that sentence Fanatec immediately had our attention!

We have been a big fan of the Fanatec Podium Steering Wheel Porsche 911 GT3 R steering wheel and preferably the suede version for a while. We have received many emails from you asking about the performance and quality of this steering wheel. We were given the opportunity to review it and of course we did this with love as usual.

The Fanatec Podium Steering Wheel Porsche 911 GT3 R consists of 4 separate components, namely the Podium Advanced Paddle Module, the Podium Hub, the Podium Button Module Endurance and the Podium Wheel Rim Porsche 911 GT3 Cup suede (or leather). The steering wheel is not cheap, you pay a total of € 729.80 for the individual parts, if you buy the complete bundle you will receive a discount of € 79.85 and you pay € 649.95 for the whole.

Packaging and Contents

As mentioned, the Fanatec Podium Steering Wheel Porsche 911 GT3 R consists of 4 separate components, which also means 4 separate packages with the associated (much too high) shipping costs. The packages are always sent via UPS at Fanatec and everything was neatly delivered after 2 working days. We are not going to say anything more about the Fanatec boxes, they are always well cared for with even nicer contents.

The Podium Steering Wheel Porsche 911 GT3 R

The Podium Steering Wheel Porsche 911 GT3 R is a luxury steering wheel with good performance and comfort. The complete Porsche 911 GT3 R wheel weighs just over 2 kg, has a diameter of 32 cm and is made of brushed and anodized aluminum covered with genuine premium suede or leather. The Podium Button Module Endurance features a carbon fiber front plate with an adjustable* OLED display, shift lights and flag LED indicators, 10 push buttons, two 2-way toggle switches, a 2-axis analog stick, 7-way FunkySwitch and two 12-position switches that can also be configured as endless rotary encoders. The steering wheel is compatible with the PC and Playstation, unfortunately it is not compatible with the Xbox. The cool thing is that this Podium Steering Wheel Porsche 911 GT3 R is an exact replica of the real Porsche steering wheel and is based on original CAD data.

* The full telemetry functionality can only be used by PC users through Fanalab. Playstation users have to make do with the telemetry data provided from the racing game (s).

Usage

As mentioned, the package consists of 4 separate components which you have to assemble yourself. All components are plug-and-play and with the supplied manual it is a job of a few minutes. Fanatec has also put the video below online in which they pay attention to assembling the steering wheel in the first minute. After assembling it is wise to install the latest Fanatec drivers and update the various components with the latest available firmware.

Side note: This movie also offers various setting options, but this is quite outdated. Most functions work out-of-the-box and further settings are better done in Fanalab (PC only).

After unpacking and assembling it is time to start racing. We have connected the steering wheel to our DD1 wheelbase and tested it extensively. We start Assetto Corsa Competizione and assign the buttons, encoders and shifters to the correct inputs (according to our preference) and we are ready to put the wheel to use. Start your Porsche 911 GT3 on your favorite track and floor it!

The steering wheel feels good and comfortable from our very first meters. The buttons feel ‘clicky’ and respond very accurately. Optionally, you can provide the buttons with the adjustable button caps with the correct label, we have also done this and it to us it completes the steering wheel. The buttons on the top part are easily accessible with your thumb without having to let go of the wheel. This does not apply to the buttons and encoders on the lower part and you will have to let go of the wheel to be able to operate it. The paddles on the APM, on the other hand, are easily accessible and well placed in terms of ergonomics.

The handles on the steering wheel are made of elastic polyurethane and covered with a premium suede. We always drive with gloves, but have deliberately put them aside during our review. The feeling is perfect even without gloves and the suede still looks like new after a few weeks of intensive use without them. However, sweaty hands and compressing your hands in the heat of the moment can damage the suede in the long run, which is why we prefer riding with gloves.

The adjustable OLED display is easy to read, even while driving. The screen offers you display options via the ‘Intelligent Telemetry Mode’ (ITM) which is quite easy to set up with Fanalab on the PC. The RGB LEDs are clearly visible and are also fully customizable via Fanalab. We use the outer series for flags and the top series as the rpm indicator. Unfortunately, PlayStation users have to make do with the in-game telemetry available for both the OLED display and the RGB LEDs.

This cool steering wheel really takes the experience of driving a Porsche 911 to a higher level. But actually it is a great experience in every car while racing.

Conclusion

What a cool steering wheel this is and what a great experience it is while racing in a Porsche 911 in Assetto Corsa Competizione. Four different components that together form a very accurate replica of the steering wheel used in real races. The steering wheel is easy to assemble and available in a suede or leather version. The build quality is good, premium materials are used and the whole thing feels very comfortable, even while driving.

The buttons, switches and encoders have a nice tactile feeling and are expandable with the adjustable Fanatec button caps so that you can provide each button with its own label. The steering wheel is equipped with beautiful bright LEDs and a 2.7 inch OLED display which can show your telemetry data. The full telemetry functionality can only be used by PC users through Fanalab. Playstation users have to make do with the telemetry data provided from the racing game (s). The fact that the steering wheel is not compatible with the Xbox is a bit unfortunate.

We can imagine that you will be shocked by the price tag for this steering wheel, but you do get something very good in return.

The Fanatec Podium Steering Wheel Porsche 911 GT3 R can be ordered as a bundle on the Fanatec website for € 649.95.
